NATO Council adopted individual partnership program with Belarus

11 March 2002

NATO Council adopted the Individual Partnership Programme for Belarus and NATO for 2002-2003. The programme came into force on 20 February.

The NATO's Partnership for Peace Programme was launched in 1994. It is aimed at the development of mutual understanding and partnership in the sphere of security. Belarus joined the Programme in 1995 upon signing the Framework Document.

At present Belarus is ready to participate in 19 spheres of co-operation with NATO. As compared to the 2000-2001 programme, there are five new spheres of co-operation: Defence research and Technology programme, NBC Non-proliferation programme, "Military Geography", "Humanitarian Mine Clearing", "Infantry and Light Armament" programmes.

The priority of the Belarus-NATO Individual Programme will be co-operation in emergency situations elimination, crises management, language training, armed forces and defence structures control.
