Meeting of the Council on Sustainable Development on the occasion of the International Day of Remembrance of the Chernobyl Disaster

On April 23, 2024 in Minsk, under the coordination of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, a thematic meeting of the Council on Sustainable Development dedicated to the International Day of Remembrance of the Chernobyl Disaster was held.

For reference: April 26 is an international day in accordance with the UN General Assembly Resolution 71/125 "Long-term consequences of the Chernobyl disaster" of December 8, 2016 initiated by the Republic of Belarus.

Representatives of international organisations and UN agencies in Belarus, the Parliament of Belarus, public organizations, youth Ambassadors of the Sustainable Development Goals, heads of diplomatic missions accredited in the Republic of Belarus took part in the Council meeting along with the leadership of the republican and regional government bodies.

The Deputy Foreign Minister, Yuri Ambrazevich, noted the contribution of the international community, including the UN system, to the recovery and development of the affected regions. He called international organisations and foreign states for further cooperation in order to solve long-term problems caused by the Chernobyl disaster.

According to the Deputy Minister, for almost 40 years of countering the disaster, Belarus has accumulated and is actively sharing with interested foreign partners unique scientific and practical experience in medicine and ecology, improving the systems of emergency preparedness, production of clean products, reclamation of lands, forests and their return into circulation.

During the meeting, representatives of government authorities, public and international organisations presented information on activities aimed at minimising the consequences of the Chernobyl NPP disaster and the prospects for further work in this area.
