On November 15, 2012 a session of the UN General Assembly on the issue of the Security Council reforms took place in New York.
During the session Assistant to President Mr. Valentin Rybakov made a statement, in which he underlined that the previous year showed that the UN Security Council plays a significant role in international relations as an organ which is responsible for international peace and security.
At the same time Mr.Valentin Rybakov marked that the Council needs reforms in order to remain the key organ in the existing international system. These reforms should be based on consensus and improve the efficiency of the Council.
Belarus supports the decision to widen the membership of the Council by including additional representatives of all regional groups. But at the same time Mr.Valentin Rybakov marked that Eastern European group is underrepresented. Belarus considers it’s important to widen the membership of this group by including non-permanent members into the Council.
Mr.Valentin Rybakov met with Mr.D.Russell, Deputy Secretary of State of the USA. During the meeting the parties discussed issues of mutual interest.
