First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus S.Lukashevich takes part in the meeting of the BRICS Foreign Ministers

30 April 2025

On April 29, 2025 the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Sergey Lukashevich, attended the meeting of the BRICS Foreign Ministers in Rio de Janeiro and spoke at the session ‘The Role of the Global South in Strengthening Multilateral Cooperation’.

In his speech, the head of the Belarusian delegation emphasised that Belarus fully shares the BRICS philosophy and approaches, including building a fair multipolar world, ensuring sustainable social and economic development, and strengthening equal and mutually beneficial cooperation in all areas.

In this regard, the Belarusian delegation stressed the readiness of the Republic of Belarus to join the work of the BRICS formats of interaction in the key areas of the BRICS activities – political, economic and humanitarian.

S.Lukashevich expressed support for the priorities of the Brazilian chairmanship of BRICS in 2025: reforming the system of international relations and security, addressing climate change, coordinating efforts to counter biological threats and combat dangerous diseases, and improving the international monetary and financial system.

The attention of the BRICS members and partners was drawn to the Belarusian initiative to develop the Eurasian Charter of Diversity and Multipolarity in the 21st Century, which is designed to promote the creation of an architecture of equal and indivisible Eurasian security. Belarus also called on the BRICS countries to pursue a common line on international platforms to counter the policy of sanctions, trade and ‘tariff’ wars.

The meeting of the BRICS foreign ministers in Rio de Janeiro was the first high-level event in which the Republic of Belarus took part in the official status of a BRICS partner state, which our country has received since January 1, 2025.

As part of his visit to Rio de Janeiro, S.Lukashevich also held bilateral meetings with the heads of the delegations of Bolivia, Brazil, Iran, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Nigeria, and Thailand, during which the parties discussed issues related to strengthening cooperation both on the bilateral track and within the framework of international organisations.
