During the meeting of the UN General Assembly First Committee Mr.Nikolai Ovsyanko, Counsellor of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Belarus to the UN, informed the Member States about the position of the Belarusian delegation on conventional weapons.
Nikolay Ovsyanko focused attention on grave consequences for international peace and security caused by indiscriminate dissemination of conventional weapons. At the same time he underlined that Belarus encourages the efforts to create a new international instrument to resolve the key problems in this area.
The Belarusian delegation welcomed progress in the negotiations at the Conference on Arms Trade Treaty (New York, July 2012) and marked that it is necessary to continue negotiations within the framework of the United Nations to achieve the universality of the Treaty.
Mr. Nikolai Ovsyanko expressed condolences to the Member States affected by the hurricane Sandy.
