On September 21 a traditional general political debate with the participation of the heads of state, the heads of government and foreign ministers opened at the UN headquarters in New York as part of the 66th UN General Assembly.
During the general debate member-states will exchange views on the most important and urgent issues on the international agenda.
Among the topics scheduled for discussion within the context of sustainable development are the problems of global climate preservation, building a more secure and lasting peace through the improvement of regional and subregional organizations and preventive diplomacy, support of the States affected the most by the global financial crisis.
Particular attention will be devoted to the problems of nuclear and conventional disarmament.
In addition to the global issues, some regional issues will be the subject of increased attention, such as the Palestinian-Israeli settlement and determination of the status of Palestine within the UN, achieving stability in the troubled region of North Africa and the Middle East.
Address of the Head of the Belarusian delegation, Foreign Minister of Belarus Sergei Martynov is scheduled for September 27.
