On the 56th Session of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space

On June 12 — 21, 2013 the 56th session of the UN  Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space took place in Vienna.

The participants of the session considered the reports on Legal, Scientific and Technical Subcommittees activities. The parties discussed a wide range of issues of international cooperation in outer space uses that included the issues of sustainable development of outer space, space technology usage, water resources management, climate change.

The delegation of Belarus took part in the session as observer-state. The delegation included the representatives of Belarus’ Permanent Mission to Vienna and Belarus’ National Academy of Sciences.

The Belarusian delegation informed the participants on the areas and results of national activities in the sphere of outer space. The representatives of the delegation marked that the policy of outer space peaceful usage conforms fully to Belarus’ National Space Program. The most significant results of the Program implementation were presented including the creation of the Belarusian Earth remote probing space system, launch of the Belarusian space vehicle (July 22, 2012), development of scientific and technical potential.

Within the session Belarus’ request to become member of the UN Committee on Peaceful Uses of Outer Space was considered.

The Committee recommended the UN General Assembly to admit Belarus as a member of the Committee within the 68th session.

The decision showed that the achievements of Belarus in the sphere of space investigation are recognized by the international community and they are interested in cooperating with our country in the sphere of peaceful uses of outer space.
