Belarus participates in the 56th Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women

From February 27 to March 9, 2012 the UN Headquarters in New York host the 56th Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women. Priority theme for the session is “The empowerment of rural women and their role in poverty and hunger eradication, development and current challenges”.

Representative of Belarus Irina Velichko, the counselor of the Department of Humanitarian Cooperation and Human Rights of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs participates in the session as the Vice-Chair of the Bureau of the Commission.

Belarusian delegation took part in a High-Level Round Table on the priority theme during the first day of the session. Belarusian representative informed the participants about the efforts made on the national level to improve the situation of rural women and to make life in rural areas more attractive; described measures to combat trafficking in persons taken with regard to rural women as they are more vulnerable than in urban communities. An appeal was made to international organizations, including the new UN entity on gender issues, UN Women, to make more effort in order to provide effective aid to the states on the grassroots level to empower women, including rural women.

On the initiative of Belarus, under the patronage of the President of the General Assembly, on the 3rd of April, 2012, the UN Headquarters will host an interactive dialog of the UN General Assembly on “Protecting the Victims of Trafficking: Partnerships and Innovation to end violence against women and children”.
