Telephone conversation of Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus V.Makei with the EU High Representative

09 October 2020

On October 9, 2020 the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Vladimir Makei, had a telephone conversation with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy / Vice-President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell.

During the conversation, the sides discussed current state and prospects for development of Belarus-EU relations.

The Belarusian side confirmed its’ fundamental readiness to promote equitable and mutually respectful dialogue with the EU. It was underlined that sanction-based approach along with the sanctions themselves had no prospects and would have a counter-productive effect on the development of Belarus-EU relations.

At the request of his counterpart, V.Makei also clarified that the approach taken by the Belarusian side towards achieving parity in diplomatic missions with Poland and Lithuania, an exclusive counter-measure as it was, did not target the EU and wasn’t aimed to curtail dialogue with the European Union. It was provoked by an especially negative role that the leaders of the above countries adopted regarding Belarus.

The sides agreed to preserve working channels for communication.
