On May 27 – June 14, 2013 the 23rd session of the UN Human Rights Council takes place in Geneva. The Belarusian delegation headed by Mr.Mikhail Khvostov, Permanent Representative of Belarus to the UN Division in Geneva, takes part in the event.

During the discussion with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights the Belarusian delegation drew attention to nonobservance of international obligations by a number of European countries in the context of struggling against terrorism taking into account their rejection to conduct investigation on the participation in CIA programs on unacknowledged detention and movement of the suspected of participation in terrorist activities.

The Belarusian delegation expressed concern in connection with the infringement of economic, social and cultural rights in the European Union, in particular, over the measures that lead to social vulnerability and growth of unemployment. The Belarusian side called the High Commissioner to demand accountability for the suppression of peaceful protests and other violations of human rights in EU.

Belarusian diplomats noted that the situation in the sphere of protection of the rights of migrants in the EU has changed for the worse and called the High Commissioner to find out the reasons that force the migrants to organize street protests, as it happens now in Sweden. The Belarusian delegation supported the Higher Commissioner in the attempts to make the USA Administration close Guantanamo prison that is the example of impunity and gross violation of the norms of international law.
