Belarus Elected to ECOSOC Commissions

Elections to a number of functional commissions of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) took place in the UN headquarters on April 26, 2012.

During the elections the Republic of Belarus was elected to the Commission on the Status of Women for the years 2012-2017. The Commission comprises 45 member states representing all regions of the world and its focus is on a wide range of issues related to protecting the rights of women in political, economic, civil, and social areas. Election of Belarus to this important UN organ demonstrates the recognition by the international community of the active position of the Belarusian state in the issues of promoting gender equality within the UN and high assessment of the national achievements of Belarus in ensuring the rights of women. Participation in the Commission's activities will provide Belarus with unique possibilities to exchange ideas, practices and working methods, that have proven their efficiency, in order to fulfill the obligations in promoting and protecting the rights of women.

The ECOSOC members have also unilaterally supported the candidature of Belarus to the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice for the years 2013-2015. Belarus was elected as a member of this international body multiple times. As a member of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Belarus aims at strengthening collective efforts of the states in global combat with organized crime, enhancement of the international criminal justice system, development of interstate cooperation within the UN in crime prevention.
