On November 13, 2012 Mr.Evgeny Lazarev,  Deputy Head of the Department for Multilateral Diplomacy of MFA of Belarus, made a statement at the UN General Assembly on the agenda item “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba”. Mr. Evgeny Lazarev underlined that Belarus is against any sanctions or enforcement measures.

Such measures contradict with the UN Statute, principles and resolutions as well as the international law and violate human rights in the countries where they are applied.

Belarus hopes the USA will finally understand that pressure on Cuba that has lasted for 50 years already is meaningless and has no future.

Belarus considers that it’s important to create a post of the Special Rapporteur on human rights and unilateral enforcement measures non-introduction. This idea was supported, as well, during the 16th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement that took part in Iran.

Belarus hopes that the USA and other countries that practice unilateral enforcement measures would consider the adopted UN resolution seriously.

For information: On November 13, 2012 UN General Assembly adopted resolution on the “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba” by a majority vote (188- voted for, 3 – against, 2 abstained on the resolution).
