34th session of the UN Committee on Information Takes Place in New York

From April 23 to May 5, 2012 New York hosts the 34th session of the UN Committee on Information. The session will discuss the major activities and priorities of the UN Department of Public Information. The participants will hear reports and exchange their views on the use of new channels to distribute information about the UN activities.

Delegation of the Republic of Belarus participates in the session and is lead by the Head of the Department of Information of the Foreign Ministry, Andrei Savinykh.

On April 24 the Belarusian representative delivered a speech at the plenary meeting of the Committee. In his address the Belarusian diplomat noted the increasing importance of the global communication processes, data interchange, exchange of best practices and practical ideas, and the role of the Department of Public Information in increasing the effectiveness of the UN program activities. A.Savinykh proposed that the Russian Service of the UN Radio and Television with the UN agencies in Belarus and their national partners would step up joint efforts to in informing and creating awareness about the implementation of the United Nations Development Assistance Framework for Belarus for 2011-2015.

The representative of Belarus also suggested developing a special textbook for local journalists to inform them about the opportunities offered by the news and media services of the UN Department of Public Information. This will help local journalists to make a more efficient use of the UN information services and extend their reach to a broader public.
