On Belarus’ Participation in the Discussion on the Issue of Middle-Income Countries

On October 21, 2013 in the framework of the United Nations General Assembly the delegation of Belarus initiated and held a discussion on the issue of middle-income countries in the UN system.

UN Member States, representatives of the Secretariat, agencies and organizations of the UN system which actively cooperate with middle-income countries took part in the event.

Ms.Shamshat Akhtar, Assistant Secretary-General for Economic Development, high representatives of UNIDO, UNFPA, UNICEF, UNDP noted the active role of Belarus in advancing the interests of middle-income countries at the international level, mentioning the holding of the regional conference on the issue in Minsk in May 2013.

The participants discussed the ways of improving cooperation with middle-income countries and creating a comprehensive coordinated approach to collaboration with this group of countries within the UN system.

Belarus plans to use the outcomes of the discussion for further work to consolidate the position of middle-income countries in the context of the UN development activities.
