Belarus to Host Memorial Events on 200th Anniversary of the War of 1812

This year marks the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 events and the battle on Berezina river. The territory of our state saw the most dramatic events of those years, which resulted in numerous victims among the military of different countries and among the civil population.

Memorial actions in Belarus should become a symbol of respect to common historical heritage, reconciliation on the European continent and a call to consolidation of the common efforts of the European states in preserving peace and stability.

The approaches of the Belarusian side were presented to the ambassadors and diplomats of the embassies of Russia, France and other European states during the briefing that was organized on May 23, 2012 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the chair of the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Alena Kupchyna.

Representatives of the Minsk oblast and Borisov region executive committees also participated in the meeting. The exchange of opinions resulted in the agreement among the participants to continue work and consultations on implementation of a number of common projects, dedicated to the memorial events of that war.

International scientific conference “The War of 1812 and Belarus” at the Belarusian State University will become the culmination of the memorial events. At the same time a meeting-requiem will be organized at the battlefield on Berezina river, as well as a staged reconstruction of that battle. These events will take place on November 23-24.

Thematic events and expositions, dedicated to the War of 1812 will be included in the work programs of the central museums and libraries, National Academy of Sciences.
