On the Participation of Belarusian Delegation in the Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women

On March 10 – 21, 2014 the 58th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women took place in New York. Mrs.Irina Velichko, Deputy Head of the Department for the Global Politics and Humanitarian Cooperation, General Department of Multilateral Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, took part in the session.

The Belarusian diplomat stated that Belarus has made significant progress in achieving gender equality since the accession of the country to the Beijing Declaration and Programme of Action for the empowerment of women in 1995.

Mrs.I.Velichko drew attention of the participants of the session to active participation of Belarusian women in elaboration and implementation of national policies at all levels. Thus, the level of women's representation in parliament of Belarus has reached 30 percent and is one of the highest in the world. Women constitute the majority of public servants at all levels of governance.

The representative of Belarus urged Member States and the UN agencies to develop and implement policies to strengthen and support the family, which gives women the opportunity to combine employment and social activities with family responsibilities, making a significant contribution to the economic well-being of the family, and through the family to development of the society.
