On November 28, 2012 a session of the UN General Assembly on the agenda item “Sport for the benefit of peace and development” took place in New York.

At the session the Belarus side expressed concern about tendency to use international sports events to put pressure on sovereign states.

The Belarus delegation noted that in October 2011 the General Assembly univocally approved the resolution on asserting peace and building a happier life on the planet via sports and relizing Olympic ideals, with 193 countries having co-authored the resolution. By adopting the document the UN member states confirmed their allegiance to Olympic ideals, among which non-discrimination holds an important position.

The Belarusian delegation was also concerned about the alarming tendency of turning the sport of records into a race between sponsors and pharmaceutical giants. Due to unbalanced judging, doping scandals and double standards in the work of international Olympic officials the sport of records may stop fostering the harmonious development of people.

The Belarus delegation called for enhancing the role of the General Assembly and its leadership in developing the international sport movement, the struggling against negative tendencies in sport, and in supporting the sphere of human development via sports.
