On the Participation of the Belarusian Delegation in the UNGA Discussion on Social Issues

On October 8, 2013 the Belarusian delegation at the 68th Session of the United Nations General Assembly took part in the discussion in the UN Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian and Human Rights issues) under the agenda item “Social Development”.

Mrs.Irina Velichko, Deputy Director for Global Policy and Humanitarian Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus, informed the participants of the discussion on the priorities of Belarus in the field of social and economic policy, measures to promote employment and improve the living standards of the population.

The representative of the Belarusian delegation called upon the international community to stand up for interests of the traditional family, particularly in the context of reproductive health, and warned against the initiatives that may lead to deterioration of the demographic situation in the countries where the population is shrinking and aging rapidly.

Mrs.Velichko underlined a special role in this process of young people who should be brought up in the spirit of traditional family values and of taking responsibility for their future and of promoting healthy development of the human civilization.

Representative of Belarus noted that, pursuant to the international obligations of Belarus the national report focused on progress and national achievements in the protection of economic, social and cultural rights will be presented to the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in November 2013.

In addition, the representative of Belarus stressed that non-discrimination and social integration of the most vulnerable social groups should be an integral part of the solution to the problem of inequality in the post-2015 development agenda.
