On the Visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Mr.Vladimir Makei to Latvia

On February 27 – 28, 2014 Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Mr.Vladimir Makei was on a working visit to Latvia.

On February 27 Mr.Vladimir Makei met with the President of Latvia Mr.Andris Bērziņš. During the meeting the parties discussed the state and prospects of Belarus-Latvia relations development in the political, trade, economic and humanitarian spheres. The sides confirmed readiness for the further expansion of cooperation in different spheres.

Later on the same day Mr.Vladimir Makei held negotiations with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Mr.Edgars Rinkēvičs. The parties discussed the dynamic bilateral dialogue development, Belarus-EU relations, taking into account Latvian chairmanship in the EU in the first half of 2015 and holding Riga summit of the Eastern Partnership Initiative. The sides also considered the advisability of the Eastern Partnership concept reformatting, the preparation of mutually beneficial projects for the Riga summit. The parties discussed the issues on the international agenda, in particular, the situation in Ukraine.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus met Minister of Transport Mr.Anrijs Matīss and Under-Secretary of State Mr.Uldis Reimanis. During the meeting the sides considered the prospects of the intensification of cooperation in the sphere of transport, logistics, IT, joint realization of infrastructure projects aimed at more effective implementation of transit potential of the two countries.

On February 28 Mr.Vladimir Makei visited service center “MTW-Service” in Riga. Within the meeting with the leadership of the company the parties discussed the current situation with the sales and assembling of the Belarusian technical equipment in Latvia, the ways of resolving challenges regarding further promotion to the Latvian market.

Mr.Vladimir Makei got familiar with the functioning of Freeport of Riga, held negotiations with the Head of the port Mr.Leonīds Loginovs. The parties discussed the prospects of Belarus-Latvia cooperation in the sphere of transport and transit and the possible directions for the expansion of interaction with the Riga port.
