18/09/2012

On September 17, 2012 Belarusian delegation headed by the Permanent Representative or the Republic of Belarus to the International Organizations in Geneva Mikhail Khvostov took part in the debates on countries human rights situations within the 21st session of the UN Human Rights Council.

The Belarusian diplomats pointed out human rights violations in the countries of the European Union, including Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, Lithuania, Netherlands, Poland,  Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

In view of the excessively lenient sentence pronounced by the Norwegian justice system on terrorist Anders Breivik the Belarusian delegation doubted the ability of the Norway authorities to guarantee the right to life and effective legal protection instruments to their citizens.

Apart from that, the Belarusian side spoke in favor of creating a special mechanism in the UN Human Rights Council to monitor the human rights situation in the European Union member states.
