Head of the Information Department — MFA Press Secretary Mr.Andrei Savinykh Comments on the Refusal of the Lithuanian side to Interact in the Implementation of the Espoo Convention Provisions

25 July 2013

25-07-2013

We have to state that the Lithuanian side does not demonstrate readiness to respond positively to our proposals on bilateral cooperation within the framework of the provisions of the Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in Transboundary Context.

We make every effort to ensure that the process of preparation for construction of the Belarusian nuclear power station fully complies with international standards.

We have provided the Lithuanian side with full and complete answers to the questions they raised. We sent to the Lithuanian side a detailed report on cross-border assessment of the effects on the environment and translated it into Lithuanian. All these activities are carried out strictly in accordance with the provisions of the international convention.

Nevertheless, we see that this information did not reach the Lithuanian community.

We sent five times proposals to the Lithuanian side to hold public consultation. All our proposals remain unanswered.

We call the Lithuanian side to return to the constructive interaction to meet the requirements of the international convention in the spirit of good-neighborliness and mutual understanding.
