On the Participation of the Belarusian Delegation in the Deliberations of the Sixth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly

The delegation of Belarus continues its participation in the deliberations of the Sixth (Legal) Committee of the United Nations General Assembly.

Mr.Andrei Popkov, Head of the general department of treaties and legal affairs of the Ministry of foreign affairs of the Republic of Belarus, took part in the annual meeting of the legal advisers of ministries of foreign affairs. The meeting provided with an opportunity to discuss topical issues of international law (links between the International Court of Justice and the other principal organs of the United Nations; implementation of international law by domestic courts etc.).

Mr.Popkov has also had consultations with representatives of several countries on strengthening the legal basis of bilateral and multilateral cooperation on regional and global level including our country’s participation in the activities of the Council of Europe Committee of Legal Advisers on Public International Law and of the Non-Aligned Movement working group on legal issues.

During the consideration of the report of International Law Commission Mr.Popkov has exchanged views with several ILC special rapporteurs on issues of future development of the law of international treaties and Belarus’ cooperation with ILC.

The representative of Belarus has stated our country’s position on topics currently under consideration by the Commission (law of international treaties, international investment law, State immunities, international cooperation in crime prevention).

Mr.Andrei Popkov has also had a meeting with recently appointed Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and United Nations Legal Counsel Mr.Miguel de Serpa Soares. They have discussed the opportunities of strengthening the cooperation between Belarus and the UN in legal matters, enhancing the cooperation patterns of the UN Office for Legal Affairs with Member States as well as approaches of Belarus to tendencies of the development of international law.

The representative of Belarus has also had a meeting with the Chairman of the Sixth Committee H.E. Palitha T.B. Kohona (Sri Lanka).
