29-10-2013

On October 28, 2013 during the discussion on international peace and security in the UN General Assembly the Deputy Head of the International Security and Arms Control Division Mr.Alexander Ponomarev delivered a statement.

The representative of Belarus underscored that the active development of space technologies and the increasing number of states that have space programs, require additional measures at the international level. Mr.Ponomarev said that Belarus which launched last year its first satellite gives high priority to the preservation the outer space free from all types of weapons.

Belarus fully supports the idea of a comprehensive agreement on the prevention of the weaponisation of outer space and the use of force or threat of force against outer space objects. Mr.Ponomarev also welcomed the need for a Code of Conduct for outer space and expressed the readiness of Belarus to take part in its preparation.

Mr.Ponomarev positively noted the outcome of the UN Group of Experts work, as well as open-ended consultation process on elaboration of international Code of Conduct in which Belarus is actively taking part.
