Comment of the MFA Press-Secretary on extension of EU visa sanctions against Belarus

10 October 2011

This decision in itself is of no particular significance. The EU has repeatedly resorted to exerting pressure on Belarus during this year.

And it is very well known that coercive measures give exactly the opposite result, they increase distrust and hamper finding effective solutions that could help to resolve existing differences.

In real politics a single “failure” can be considered an accident, the two are a coincidence, but three or more are an apparent proof of the wrong actions.

After a clear political fiasco of anti-Belarusian initiatives at the Eastern Partnership Summit in Warsaw, this simply strikes the eye.

But the Western States keep “stepping on the same rake”.

This allows to draw a few conclusions with confidence.

The EU does not have any meaningful policy towards Belarus and calms itself with an imitation of action.

European politicians that are active at the Belarusian direction, can not or do not want to work out any proposals that would suit the EU, while taking into account time the right of Belarus to sovereign and independent development.

With all the loud declarations European political circles demonstrate little interest in finding solutions, because they realize the artificial nature of their claims.

The Belarusian side believes that sooner or later the EU will have to break this vicious circle and return to the normal dialogue.

We expect that our European colleagues will be wise enough to do so.
