23 September 2011

High-level meeting on nuclear safety and security took place on September 22 at the UN headquarters in New York within the framework of the 66th UN General Assembly. The Belarusian delegation at the event was headed by Assistant to the President of the Republic of Belarus for Foreign Affairs, Valentin Rybakov.

The next steps of the international community aimed at strengthening nuclear safety and security were discussed during the meeting.

Addressing the meeting, Valentin Rybakov underlined that nuclear safety has become a major factor in the decision of Belarus to build nuclear power plant, as well as when choosing a potential partner, the project and the location of the station.

The head of the Belarusian delegation supported the need to further improve international legal instruments in the nuclear field, especially the IAEA Convention on Nuclear Safety and the Convention on Early Notification of a Nuclear Accident.

Valentin Rybakov underlined that Belarus responsibly fulfills its international obligations regarding nuclear safety, including nonproliferation of nuclear arms and safety of nuclear materials. Together with the IAEA and other international partners, our country accurately implements the Integrated Nuclear Security Support Plan.

In this regard Rybakov expressed regret that Belarus had to suspend the implementation of projects of exchange of highly enriched nuclear fuel in response to the sanctions imposed against our country.
