Press Secretary A.Glaz answers the question of “Sputnik Belarus” about conversation between V.Makei and the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State

04 February 2022

Sputnik Belarus: The Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs of the US State Department reported on its’ Twitter account that Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Karen Donfried had a conversation with the Foreign Minister of Belarus V.Makei. Could the Belarusian Foreign Ministry provide any details of the dialogue that took place, what topics were touched upon?

A.Glaz: Yes, indeed, such a conversation took place yesterday upon the initiative of the American side. In fact, a wide range of issues were considered although the U.S. Department of State's slanted presentation of information about the content of the conversation is no longer surprising.

The sides discussed primarily the current situation in the region. Our vision of the ongoing processes was conveyed to the American side, they shared their concerns. In this context, certainly – and the minister emphasized it – speculations about some kind of initiative military aggression from Belarus' territory against Ukraine are simply laughable.

To be honest, any Belarusian probably understands that such fictions can exist perhaps only in the heads of bad strategists and analysts, who are very far from understanding the processes in our region.

Due to the interest of the American side, it was emphasized that the scheduled army exercises, which face so much hysterics in the West, has been arranged precisely due to the obvious fomenting of tensions near our borders.

The sides also touched upon the bilateral agenda, including Minsk's vision of ways out of the current situation in Belarus-U.S. relations, and domestic political processes in Belarus ahead of the constitutional referendum.

The interlocutor also expressed the traditional set of clichés on human rights issues. V.Makei expressly stated that regretfully our Western partners continue evaluating the situation inside and around Belarus on the basis of false messages and their evaluations are still detached from reality.
