Rio+20 Conference Opened in Brazil

UN Conference on Sustainable Development (“Rio+20”) started its work in Rio de Janeiro, Federative Republic of Brazil, on June 20, 2012.
Delegation of the Republic of Belarus, headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergei Martynov, is one of the active participants of this event.
The Republic of Belarus was elected to the post of Vice President of “Rio+20” in recognition of its contribution to sustainable development. On June 20 the head of the Belarusian delegation chaired one of the segments of the plenary discussion.
It is expected that the participants of the conference will adopt a final document, outlining key avenues for transition of the world community to the sustainable development, based on the progress in economic, social and ecologic spheres. The document will define key principles of international interaction in the area of sustainable development, and will provide the basis for multilateral cooperation in the process of adopting “green” economy, which is to enable economic growth coupled with improvements in the social sphere and in environment.
Over 100 heads of states and governments take part in “Rio+20”. The total number of participants in the Conference approaches 40 thousand persons, among them representatives of governments, parliaments, mayors, prominent public figures.
On the sidelines of the conference the head of the Belarusian delegation Sergei Martynov met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the PRC, Yang Jiechi, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia Marty Natalegawa. During these meetings the sides discussed the issues of bilateral cooperation.
