Press Service of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry comments on the resolution on the human rights situation in Belarus adopted by the UN Human Rights Council

05 July 2012

05/07/2012

The adoption today by the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) of the resolution initiated by the European Union demonstrates that European countries continue to use human rights as a tool of political manipulation and pressure. It is logical therefore that despite all efforts of the sponsors of the resolution, the majority of the HRC member states – 25 of 47 – did not support it.

Belarus spurns the resolution as politically motivated and as having nothing to do with the promotion of human rights. Neither does the Belarusian Side homologate the mandate of the HRC Special Rapporteur on Belarus, created by this resolution, and will not cooperate with him.

We recall that the previous post of Special Rapporteur on Belarus totally discredited itself and for that very reason was abolished by the UN General Assembly in 2007.

Recognizing the importance of international mechanisms to monitor human rights situation, Belarus has consistently been advocating transparency, objectivity and non-selectiveness as core principles of these universal structures.
