Belarus Delegation did not Support the Resolution of the UN Human Rights Council

22 November 2012

 22/11/2012

On November 20, 2012 the Belarus delegation did not support the resolution of the UN Human Rights Council at the 67th session of the UN General Assembly.

Ms.Larisa Belskaya, the Counselor of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Belarus to the United Nations, underlined that there are reasons for the decision of the Belarusian side, one of them is the adoption by the Council of the resolution establishing the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on Belarus in July, 2012. The decisions imposed on the Council by a group of  EU countries intentionally distort the human rights situation in our country and are designed to interfere with the internal affairs of Belarus.

Ms.Larisa Belskaya expressed concern that UN Human Rights Council widely practices such decisions as a form of political pressure on sovereign states and demonstrates double standards.

Belarus is willing to further cooperate with the UN Human Rights Council and its special procedures in order to promote and protect human rights in all countries of the world and will develop cooperation with the states that wish the Council to play the role of the main body protecting human right fairly.
