On the Participation of Belarus’ Delegation in the Deliberations of the Sixth Committee of the UN GA

On October 21, 2013 within the Sixth (Legal) Committee of the United Nations General Assembly Deputy Head of the Legal Affairs and Treaty Directorate of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry Ms.Lyudmila Tatarinovich took part in the discussion of the reports of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law, Special Committee on the UN Charter and on the Strengthening the Role of the Organization.

The delegation of Belarus has commended the UNCITRAL efforts in the field of harmonization and development of international and national trade law. Belarus as the member of the Commission has been actively involved in elaborating the transparency standards for investor-State treaty-based arbitration. Within the framework of UNCITRAL Belarus intends to continue its work on online trade and dispute resolution, legal regime for small and medium-sizes enterprises, cross-border insolvency etc.

With regard to the activities of the Special Committee on the UN Charter the representative of Belarus has outlined the approaches of Belarus to the main areas of the Committee’s work. Thus, the necessity of the enhancement of the UN sanctions regimes has been stressed, as well as the need for ensuring the balance of powers between the UN’s principal organs.

The Sixth Committee has also discussed the scope and application of the principle of universal jurisdiction as a means to hold accountable in accordance with the UN Charter, rule of law principle and other norms and principles of international law those guilty of crimes against peace, war and other crimes as defined under international law.
