On October 8 – 10, 2013 Mr.Alexandr Mikhnevich, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus, was on a visit to New York to participate in the 68th session of the UN General Assembly.

During his stay at the UN Headquarters First Deputy Head of Belarus’ Foreign Office delivered a statement at the meeting of the First Committee of UN General Assembly (questions of international peace and security). In his statement Mr.Mikhnevich expressed concern over the fact that several states do not reduce but rather increase their nuclear potential. The Belarusian diplomat noted that having renounced the possession of the nuclear weapons as long as 20 years ago, Belarus is still committed to continue to actively participate in the process of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. Participants of the meeting were also informed of national measures aimed at preventing proliferation of weapons of mass destruction as well as its means of delivery. Mr.Mikhnevich called on UN Member States to more actively and affectively cooperate on this issue in the international arena.

Mr.Mikhnevich also had a meeting with the UN High Representative on Disarmament Ms.Angela Kane to discuss the current state and perspectives for cooperation between Belarus and United Nations in the area of disarmament. In particular the sides discussed the situation in the field of disarmament in the Middle East and agreed to continue mutually interested cooperation between Belarus’ MFA and Office on Disarmament Affairs on the issue of disarmament.
