On the Participation of the Belarusian Delegation in the ECOSOC Session

The Belarusian delegation takes part in the session of the UN Economic and Social Council, which takes place on July 1 — 26, 2013 in Geneva.

Within the discussion on social issues and human rights the representatives of Belarus highly assessed the results of the visit to Belarus of the Executive Director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, Mr.Yury Fedotov, the results of the seminar in Minsk on human trafficking with the participation of representatives of the Group of Friends Member States united in the fight against trafficking in persons, as well as high-level meetings of the UN General Assembly to review the implementation of the initiated by Belarus Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons. The participants of the event were informed that Belarus made contribution into the Voluntary Trust Fund for Victims of Trafficking in Persons and called upon others to follow this example.

The Belarusian delegation strongly condemned the mechanisms of political and economic coercion as pressure on sovereign states and called for the special procedures establishment within the United Nations to solve the problem.

The Economic and Social Council adopted by consensus the Belarusian resolution “Implementation of the Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Human Beings” which was recommended by the UN Commission on Drugs and Crime. The resolution invites the international community to take measures in combating trafficking in human beings for organs, tissues and cells. The participants adopted draft decision presented by the Belarusian delegation on the enlargement of the Executive Committee of the High Commissioner’s for Refugees Program.
