Belarus addresses the First Committee of the UN General Assembly

On October, 5, in New York, Head of the International Security and Arms Control Division of the Foreign Ministry of Belarus Vladimir Gerasimovich addressed the First Committee of the UN General Assembly during the general debate, introducing the Statement made on the international security and disarmament by the CSTO member-states.

The Statement was prepared on the initiative of the Belarusian side, which at present is CSTO chair, and approved during the informal meeting of CSTO foreign ministers held on September, 26 in New York.

In particular, the document highlights the commitment of the CSTO member-states to strengthening the multilateral disarmament, non-proliferation and arms control mechanisms.

Among the priority subjects the CSTO foreign ministers see the provision of equal and indivisible security for all states as a condition for further progress in the sphere of nuclear disarmament, strengthening of non-proliferation regimes, support the process of creating nuclear-weapon-free and weapon-of-mass-destruction-free zones in different parts of the world as well as the issue of providing and observing security guarantees.

The Statement also highlights a number of areas that the CSTO member-states consider as being equally important, and need to be promoted within the framework of the appropriate international forums. Among these issues are: counteraction against the challenges and threats of politico-military, terrorist and criminal character, that emerge on the media scene, including working out of the code of conduct in this sphere; the necessity of taking effective measures to prevent the creation of new types of weapons of mass destruction and new systems of such weapons; elaboration of international measures for transparency and confidence-building in in outer space activities and prevention of the placement weapons of any type in outer space.
