Mogilev Oblast

Mogilev Oblast is located in the center of the Republic’s eastern part. The Oblast occupies 14% of the country’s territory, 12.2% of the population reside here. Mogilev (with the population of 371 thousand people) is the center. The Oblast comprises 21 districts, 195 rural councils, 13 towns, including 5 towns of Oblast jurisdiction, 12 urbanized settlements.

Chemical and petrochemical production occupies the leading place in the Oblast’s industry. The volume of chemical and petrochemical output gets the Oblast ahead of all other regions. The specialty of the industry is the production of chemical fibers, organic synthesis products, tires, rubber products. Food processing, machine engineering, and electric energy production account for a significant percentage of the industrial potential. In machine engineering and metal working a leading role is played by automobile, agricultural machinery and road construction machinery production.

Major mineral resources in the Oblast are cement and lime, peat, phosphate rock, chalk, building sand and gravel, dolomites and mineral water. The local raw materials are used in the production of building materials and other products. Building materials are manufactured by such companies as Krichev Cement and Asbestos Sheeting Factory, Belarusian Cement Factory in Kostiukovichi, lime-sand products factory, reinforced concrete, prefabricated concrete products, building materials, brick factories, glass-making factories in Glush and Elizov.

Agricultural regions specialize in meat and milk production, pig breeding and flax growing. The areas under grain, fodder and potatoes have been expanded. In the vicinity of major cities the agricultural farms additionally specialise in poultry and vegetable production.

The Oblast’s territory is crossed by a developed network of railroads and motorways connecting it with industrial centers of Belarus and regions of Russia, Ukraine and Baltic states. Three major railways run via the territory of the Oblast, Orsha-Zhlobin from North to South, Orsha-Unecha from North-West to South-East, and Yaroslavl-Baranovichi from East to West. Motorways are better developed in the West and partly in the southern districts of the Oblast. The most important motorways are St.Petersburg-Kyiv, Mogilev-Minsk, Mogilev-Bobruisk and Minsk-Zhlobin.
