Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus I.Sekreta takes part in an international conference dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl NPT accident
24 April 2026
On April 24, 2026 the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Igor Sekreta, took part in an international conference marking the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident: ‘40 Years After Chernobyl: Results’, which is held at the Education Centre for Life Safety of the Ministry of Emergency Situations.

In his opening remarks at the plenary session, Igor Sekreta noted that Belarus had not merely survived the disaster, but had become a country of expertise, a driving force in international cooperation to overcome the consequences of radiation accidents.
The Deputy Minister confirmed that Belarus has always shared and remains ready to continue sharing its accumulated experience with the international community, with all states and organisations open to constructive dialogue, thereby contributing to global efforts to overcome the consequences of man-made disasters.
Igor Sekreta drew particular attention to the fact that, despite all the lessons of the Chernobyl accident, the politicisation of the Chernobyl agenda continues, which blocks the resolution of specific issues, restricts access to technical assistance and, in general, has a negative impact on the development of the affected regions.

The Deputy Minister emphasised that, in the context of the growing crisis in global governance, new rules for international engagement are needed, under which humanitarian cooperation is, by definition, kept separate from politics, so that the Chernobyl issue is not held hostage to geopolitical disagreements and politicisation.
In conclusion, Igor Sekreta expressed his confidence that the conference would make a worthy contribution to the noble efforts to improve measures aimed at preventing similar disasters, and to the exchange of experience and technologies to ensure the safety of nuclear facilities and protect public health worldwide.
