Commemorative event at the Khatyn memorial complex

22 March 2023

On March 22, 2023 on the 80th Anniversary of the Khatyn tragedy, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Sergei Aleinik, together with the officials of the Foreign Ministry and the heads of diplomatic missions and international organisations accredited in our country visited the Memorial Complex ”Khatyn“  to pay tribute to the tragic events in the history of Belarus.

S.Aleinik stressed that Khatyn is a symbol of historical memory in Belarus and a place of nationwide grief. 149 people, including 75 children, were burnt alive and shot dead by Hitler's punitive forces. The memorial complex created at the site of the tragedy became the embodiment of the victims, sufferings and courage of the Belarusians during the Great Patriotic War.

Khatyn is not the only one, its fate was shared by hundreds of other Belarusian villages. There are many similar  tragic places not only in Belarus, but also on the territory of the former USSR countries  and European states.

"Today the bells of #Khatyn sound particularly alarming, as if reminding world leaders of the tragedy that took place 80 years ago. These bells are urging us to stop and reflect on the tragic lessons of our past", - stressed the Minister.

A wreath-laying ceremony at the Eternal Flame and a visit by the diplomatic corps to the museum ”Every third“ took place during the visit to the memorial complex.

The memorial event was attended by over 50 heads of foreign diplomatic missions from the CIS countries, Europe, Asia, Africa and America and representatives of a number of international organisations.
