Deputy Foreign Minister Belarus S.Aleinik takes part in the Second Ministerial Meeting of the Group of Friends in Defense of the UN Charter

On October 12, 2021 the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Sergei Aleinik, participated in the Second Ministerial Meeting of the Group of Friends in Defense of the UN Charter, that was held in Belgrade (Serbia) on the margins of the High-Level Meeting to mark the 60th Anniversary of the Non-Aligned Movement.

During the Meeting, S.Aleinik stressed the relevance of states' compliance with the principles and objectives of the UN Charter, which is a cornerstone document in the architecture of international law. The Deputy Minister emphasized the need for joint efforts to counter unilateral coercive measures that pose a threat both to the sustainable development of States and directly to their sovereignty and security.

 

 

Members of the Meeting of the Group of Friends adopted Political Declaration in order to confirm joint efforts aimed at protecting the goals and principles enshrined in the UN Charter.

Background Information: The Group of Friends is an informal association of like-minded states in the UN, which was created on the initiative of Venezuela in July 2021. The Group consists of Algeria, Angola, Belarus, Bolivia, Cambodia, China, North Korea, Cuba, Iran, Laos, Nicaragua, Palestine, Russia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Syria, Equatorial Guinea and Eritrea, Venezuela. The objectives of the Group are to resist unilateral coercive measures, to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the participating countries in accordance with the principles of international law, to promote joint initiatives aimed at protecting and strengthening the authority of the provisions of the UN Charter.

At the meeting with the Undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry for Diplomatic Affairs of Oman, Khalifa bin Ali bin Issa al-Harthy, issues of the development of political, trade and economic cooperation between the two countries were discussed. Special attention was paid to the enhancement of contacts between states, organizing visits at various levels. The sides exchanged views on the current issues on the international agenda.

The expansion of trade and economic cooperation and mutual support within multilateral organizations were discussed at the meetings with the Senior Political Advisor to the President of Eritrea ,Yamane Ghebreab, and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the Russian Federation, Ahmed Alsaati.
