On the Participation of the Delegation of Belarus in the 61st Session of UNCTAD Trade and Development Board

61st Session of the Trade and Development Board of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) commenced its work on 15 September 2014.

Mr.Mikhail Khvostov, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Belarus was elected Vice-President of the Board. Mrs.Ana Maria Menendez Perez, Permanent Representative of Spain to the United Nations Office and Other International Organizations in Geneva was elected President of the Board.

The Board will review from the development perspective the issues of inequality, sustained recovery of the global economy, trends in the international trading system, investment cooperation and LDC-related issues. The Board will also adopt decisions relevant to the organization of further work of UNCTAD.

Delegation of the Republic of Belarus made a statement at the Plenary Session of the Board on behalf of the regional group “D”. Belarus’ delegation underlined the importance of tackling inequality with the view to ensure sustainable economic growth. An important role of agriculture for the countries with economies in transition was noted in the context of evolution of the international trading system. UNCTAD’s Action Plan to mobilize investments for sustainable development was marked as deserving in-depth exploration by the international community. The work of UNCTAD in the field of technical cooperation was appreciated taking into account a number of technical assistance projects implemented in the region. The delegation of Belarus also recognized the UNCTAD’s significant role in the intergovernmental consensus-building on development issues.

The session will conclude its work on 26 September 2014.
