Alexander Lukashenko warmly welcomed representatives of the world scientific elite and underlined that science can be developed only as an international phenomenon.

Belarus pays special attention to development of science. Support of science and education is one of the main important directions of the state policy. This republic is practically the only one on the post-Soviet area, which has not reduced the number of students in establishments of higher education but has increased it two times. Science is one of the main instruments of realization of the main priorities of development of our state, among which is export, accommodation and foodstuffs, the head of state noted.

Several measures have been taken lately in the republic aimed at reforming science. Alexander Lukashenko explained heads of foreign scientific organizations the reasons caused the necessity to reform the scientific sphere.

Now the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus plays a considerable role in the life of the republic. The academy is involved not only in theoretical work but also takes part in concrete negotiations, development of the most important directions of development of the country and sometimes is an original “counterbalance” for the government.

Life has confirmed the correctness and timeliness of reforming science in Belarus, which did not cause any shocks and did not throw it back but gave positive results.

According to the president, creation of the Belarusian-Russian super-computer “Skif”, which was included in the 500 top achievements of 2003, confirms it. The head of state has noted that Belarusian scientists jointly with their Russian and Ukrainian colleagues are developing a space remote sounding system of the Earth.

Alexander Lukashenko has repeatedly stated that the state will continue supporting scientists.

Heads of the Academies of Sciences of Russia, Ukraine, Lithuania, Austria and Poland confirmed the high cooperation level with Belarusian scientists. Exchange of scientific discoveries gives positive results. Foreign academicians put a high value on the fact that the Belarusian leadership had taken a clear-sighted decision and had not followed the path of reducing abstract sciences, so a positive result is obvious. The Belarusian science has survived and is developing, foreign guests noted.

Alexander Lukashenko expressed gratitude to masters of sciences for their high assessment of measures taken for development of science and the National Academy of Sciences.

During the meeting the Belarusian state leader decorated president of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Boris Paton with an Order of Frantsysk Skaryna. Boris Paton is an outstanding scientist, whose services are worldwide recognized.
