Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Vladimir Makei took part in the meeting of the CIS Council of Foreign Ministers

On April 2, 2021, a Belarusian delegation, led by Vladimir Makei, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, took part in the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Commonwealth of Independent States.

The heads of the foreign ministries discussed the current situation in the region, the key directions of the development of relations, the interaction of the participating countries on the further enhancement of integration processes in the CIS region, cooperation in the international arena.

Addressing the meeting, V.Makei informed on a number of issues of regional importance, which are a priority for the Belarusian side.

The head of the Belarusian foreign ministry noted that, despite the continuing difficult situation with the spread of coronavirus infection, the chairmanship of Belarus in the CIS is proceeding at a good working pace, all executive bodies of the Commonwealth are operating in a prescribed mode and assured that our country is giving priority to the development of trade, economic and investment component of the Commonwealth.

“I am confident that by joint efforts we will implement all the measures planned within the framework of the Belarusian chairmanship, thereby ensuring a comprehensive expansion of integration processes, deepening economic and cooperation ties, joint counteraction to modern threats and challenges” – added V.Makei.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus drew attention to the need to increase cooperation and coordination within the CIS in the field of disease prevention and control.

V.Makei also expressed deep gratitude to Russia for the timely delivery of the Sputnik-V vaccine to Belarus and informed about the start of the production of this vaccine on the territory of our country.

During his speech, the head of the foreign ministry of Belarus noted the unprecedented nature of attempts of external interference in the internal affairs of states, attempts to undermine the situation in various regions and countries of the world in favor of one or another force.

“I firmly believe that in order to counter global threats, it is necessary to strengthen international cooperation. Further strengthening of the CIS, expanding our interaction at all levels and in all possible formats, unified positions and mutual support within the framework of leading international platforms will help to cope with the risks and threats to national, regional and international security” – stated V.Makei.

During the meeting, a number of joint documents were approved and submitted for consideration by the Council of CIS Heads of State:

♦ the draft Treaty of the member states of the Commonwealth of Independent States on combating the legalization (laundering) of proceeds of crime, the financing of terrorism and the financing of the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction;

♦ a draft Address of the CIS heads of states to the peoples of the states - members of the Commonwealth and the world community in connection with the 80th anniversary of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.

A number of documents were approved and submitted to the next meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of the Commonwealth of Independent States:

♦ Draft Protocol on Amendments to the Agreement on Cooperation of the Commonwealth Member States in the Field of Geodesy, Cartography, Cadastre and Remote Sensing of the Earth, dated October 9, 1992;

♦ the draft Decision on the basic organization of the Member States of the CIS in the field of operational and strategic training of officers of the armed forces.

The Council of Foreign Ministers considered and adopted:

♦ Action plan for 2021–2023 for the implementation of the Strategy for the development of cooperation between the Member States of the CIS in the field of physical culture and sports for 2021–2030;

♦ Action plan for 2021–2023 for the implementation of the Strategy for the Development of Cooperation of the Member States of the CIS in the field of tourism for 2021–2030;

♦ An action plan for 2021–2022 for the implementation of the Strategy for International Youth Cooperation of the Member States of the CIS for 2021–2030.

Additionally, the CIS Council of Foreign Ministers discussed the implementation of the Action Program to enhance partnership between the foreign ministries of the Member States of the CIS in 2020 and decided to continue work on the fullest use of the Program's potential.

The parties also decided to hold the next meeting of the CIS Council of Foreign Ministers on October 14, 2021 in the Republic of Belarus.
