Alexander Lukashenko Meets with Pierre Cardin (press release by press service of the President)

On January 7, President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko met with a famous French couturier, a patron of art, a UNESCO goodwill ambassador Pierre Cardin.

Head of the State pointed out that “Pierre Cardin is a real friend of our country. He helps us in coping with the aftereffects of the Chernobyl disaster. He popularizes our culture in France with a genuine enthusiasm.”

Pierre Cardin arranged financial assistance for implementing the programme ‘UNESCO-Chernobyl’; he offered help in constructing the centres of social and psychological rehabilitation in the settlement of Aksakovshchina, Minsk District, in the village of Pershai, Volozhin District, in the village of Streshin, Zhlobin District. His patronage of art included substantial assistance given by him for the holding of the Days of Culture of the Republic of Belarus in Paris on April 16-20, 2002.

By Decree of President of Belarus of October 16, 2002, Pierre Cardin is awarded the Order of Francysk Skaryna in recognition of his considerable contribution in developing Belarusian-French relations in the field of culture, and his assistance in overcoming the consequences of the Chernobyl NPP accident. On January 7, the French couturier received that award from Alexander Lukashenko at the ceremony of awarding the prizes “For Spiritual Revival- 2003” and the special prizes of President of the Republic of Belarus for the workers of culture and arts.

The meeting between the President of our country and Pierre Cardin focused on discussing further cooperation aimed at the strengthening of Belarusian-French relationship. For one thing, a possibility is now being considered for staging in Minsk a musical performance by Pierre Cardin “Tristan and Isolde.” The Belarusian party expressed its interest in organizing study tours for the specialists of the Belarusian Fashion Centre and the National School of Beauty at the Espace Pierre Cardin in Paris.

Pierre Cardin expressed his gratitude for the high government award of our country and his willingness for further cooperation.
