20 July 2022

On July 20, 2022 the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Yuri Ambrazevich, met with the Special Rapporteur of the UN Human Rights Council of the Rights of Migrants, Felipe González Morales, wrapping up his three-day visit to the Republic of Belarus.

The Deputy Minister informed the Special Rapporteur about the approaches of Belarus to the fulfillment of obligations in the field of human rights, including the rights of migrants, which are based on the provision of specific rights and guarantees both to citizens of our country and to foreigners staying on Belarusian territory.

Y.Ambrazevich emphasized openness to interaction with the Special Rapporteur, based on the experience of long-term cooperation on the topic of migrants and refugees with UN agencies, both in the traditional routine and systematic work during the 30-year of the UN presence in Belarus, and in times of crisis.

The Deputy Minister expressed confidence in the depoliticized and professional approach of the Special Rapporteur to the study of the Belarusian migration management system, migration policy instruments and their capacities to protect and implement the rights of migrants, which have repeatedly received high marks from the UN.

The Special Rapporteur shared his impressions of the meetings which took place during his stay and thanked for the assistance in organizing the visit. The official resume of the combined visit to Belarus and Poland will be presented at an online press conference, which he will hold from Geneva on July 28, 2022.

The parties agreed that ensuring managed migration, as well as combating illegal migration, depend to a great extent on the effectiveness of cooperation between the states of origin, transit and destination.
