On the Visit of Belarusian Delegation to Brussels

On 29 September-1 October 2014 a delegation of Belarus headed by Alena Kupchyna, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, visited Brussels to take part in the third round of consultations on modernization issues between Belarus and European Union.

The Belarusian delegation included representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and of the Ministry of Transport. The EU delegation was headed by Gunnar Wiegand, Director of the Department for Russia, Eastern Partnership, Central Asia, Regional Co-operation and the OSCE of the European External Action Service, and included experts of the EEAS and of the European Commission.

During the meeting the Sides had a substantive exchange of views on potential cooperation in the spheres of transport and logistics, energy and environment protection. Among issues discussed were joint management of water resources, waste management, preservation of biodiversity, improvement of radiological control, development of energy and transport systems in Belarus, use of alternative energy sources, approximation of international standards in these fields and participation of Belarus in relevant thematic instruments and programmes of the EU.

The main goal of the consultations on modernization is to determine the best future form of cooperation between the Government of Belarus and the European Union.

During the visit to Brussels Alena Kupchyna met with Štefan Füle, the European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, Helga Schmid, Deputy Secretary General of the EEAS, and several Members of the European Parliament to discuss the ways of developing relations between Belarus and the EU.
