On April 21, 2022 on the eve of the International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day, established by the United Nations at the initiative of Belarus, the thematic meeting of the Council for Sustainable Development was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the assistance of the United Nations Development Programme in Belarus, dedicated to the possibilities of improving the work in the development of regions, affected by the disaster at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, through the involvement of the UN agencies, programs and funds.

Deputy Foreign Minister Yuri Ambrazevich drew attention to the strategic expansion of the focus of national efforts from assistance and rehabilitation to the development of the economic and human potential of the affected regions.

The Deputy Minister emphasized the interest of the Belarusian side in attracting international partners to solve practical problems to ensure the sustainable development of these regions and the population.

Y.Ambrazevich stressed that the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals should be the same adequate agenda for the Chernobyl-affected regions of Belarus, as well as for the capital, and for the country as a whole.

UNDP Resident Representative in Belarus Alexandra Solovieva noted the close interaction with local, national and international partners in the development of the affected regions. Over 30 years of working with Belarus, UNDP has accumulated significant experience in the field of regional development, namely in support of entrepreneurship, public health, education and work with youth, conservation of natural resources, development of ecotourism and preservation of cultural heritage.

A.Solovieva stressed that support for regional development is one of the key strategic directions in the framework of current and future cooperation between UNDP and Belarus.

The results of the discussion will be used in the work of the Government and UNDP to improve the mechanisms of bilateral partnership in order to promote the sustainable development of the Chernobyl-affected regions of Belarus.
