On April 14, 2024 the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Sergei Aleinik, negotiated with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, Ahmed Attaf.

The colleagues discussed a wide range of issues on the bilateral, regional and international agenda, identified specific priorities and areas of joint activities for the near future.

Particular attention was paid to the intensification of trade and economic cooperation and the implementation of cooperation projects in a number of areas of mutual interest. These include the agro-industrial sector, science and technology, the humanitarian dimension.

In this regard, the sides agreed to start the work of the Belarusian-Algerian Joint Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation in the coming months.

The desire to actively cooperate in the field of food security in the North African region was reaffirmed. The sides intend to continue efforts to improve access to food in the region. The parties confirmed the devastating impact of illegal sanctions imposed by Western countries on this area. Their irresponsible restriction of the transit of Belarusian fertilisers provoked a rise in food prices and worsened the hunger situation in a number of African countries.

Agreements were reached to expand the contractual and legal framework for bilateral cooperation from framework to sectoral agreements.

The sides also pointed out the need to work on the launch of a direct air link between the capitals of Algeria and Belarus, which will help increase tourism, business and cultural ties between the two nations.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus invited his Algerian counterpart, Ahmed Attaf, to pay an official return visit to the Republic of Belarus.
