The structure of the Belarusian economy is export oriented. The share of export in the Gross Domestic Product exceeds 50 percent.
The volume of the Belarusian export has increased from USD 7 billion in 1998 to USD 21 billion in 2009. In 2008 exports reached USD 7 billion, but the rates of export growth decreased under the negative influence of the financial and economic crisis. The recovery in exports is expected in 2011.
Export products of Belarus are diverse and include more than 1000 articles. Among the major export commodities of Belarus are potash and nitrogen fertilizers, oil products, rolled steel, metal cord, trucks, tractors, chemical fibers and yarns, caprolactam, tires, furniture, refrigerators and freezers, wood products, clothing, shoes, dairy and meat products, sugar.
Significant export potential of the Belarusian economy is concentrated in the petrochemical and chemical industry. In 2009 exports of oil products brought USD 7 billion into the Belarusian economy. Despite the small volume of crude oil extracted in the country (1 million barrels per year) Belarusian enterprises annually process around 22 million tons of high quality oil products, which mainly have been exported to the European market.
The country produces a wide range of high technology products with stable demand in foreign markets: tractors, agricultural machinery, trucks, buses and trams, road-building machinery, technical equipment, refrigerators, TV sets, gas cookers, washing machines, microelectronics and optical devices.
Agricultural products have an important share in the Belarusian exports. In 2009 exports of milk and dairy products reached USD1 billion.
